BMW R 1300 GS comes with 12mm bar above the dashboard, suitable for installation of various GPS units and phone mounts. This puts the GPS/phone in line of sight and works very well.
For riders who want to have a GPS and a phone installed at the same time, another mounting position is needed. Perun moto offers simple, yet extremely effective Direct Handlebar Clamp (32mm) AMPS. As the name suggests, it mounts to 32mm oversize handlebars and offers AMPS bolt pattern.
As we have written in our PREVIOUS BLOG POST, Direct handlebar clamp works great with Garmin Zumo XT (for riders preferring to mount GPS to their handlebars). However, in my opinion, this position is better suited for a phone.
We have recently tested how two of the QuadLock most commonly used phone mounts work with our Direct handlebar clamp.
First setup uses QuadLock Lever Head and QuadLock Flat rectangle 4-hole base. Flat rectangle base bolts straight to Direct handlebar clamp.
This is great and simple "everyday" setup. It doesn't push the phone too much toward the rider. Phone can easily be mounted either horizontally or vertically. One potential drawback lies in the need to use USB cable to charge the phone.
Angle and position of the phone can be adjusted.
From riders' point of view, vertically mounted phone might block the bottom part of instrument panel. This will depend on rider's height, size of the phone and position in which Direct handlebar clamp was mounted (upper plate can be flipped either way, providing 60mm of fore-aft adjustment).
For touring purposes, or any longer rides, using QuadLock Weatherproof Wireless charger head is more convenient option. Flat rectangle 4 hole base is still needed to connect wireless charging head to the Direct handlebar clamp.
In order to make room for the USB plug on the underside of Wireless charger head, I had to use a spacer (included with the Rectangular base). This setup pushes the phone couple of centimeters closer to the rider.
This Head has a USB-A connector, which plugs right into the USB plug in compartment in front of the fuel cap.
Wiring it directly to the battery is possible if QuadLock Waterproof 12V To USB Smart Adaptor is used.
Vertical and horizontal mounting of the phone is possible. Same as with Lever head, vertically mounted phone might block lower part of the instrument cluster (can be avoided by adjusting position of Direct handlebar clamp).
