IMO, BMW Motorrad did a great job separating non-Adv GS from GS Adv in the R1300 series. Now we can choose between two very different bikes, instead of having a one bike with different fuel tanks and windscreens. Although new brothers share a lot, aesthetically they are very different.
R1300GS Adventure has a large fuel tank and bulky bodywork, but it also has a very beefy subframe and rear end which resembles an older GS Adv models. It is still a great overland machine, designed for a long haul and capable of carrying a lot of luggage.
On the other end of this (narrow) spectrum, stands a much sportier and lighter non-Adv R1300GS, with smaller capacity fuel tank, slimmer bodywork and lighter and nimbler aluminum subframe. And this work-of-art subframe was one of the first things that caught my attention when I first saw R1300GS. Paired with a small OEM seat or rear-seat-box and small OEM grab handles, it creates very stylish and sporty rear end.
But, most of the R1300GS bikes come with Pillion package specced (because of the center stand, heated seats and electric windscreen), and this package includes very bulky comfort passenger seat and appropriate plastic luggage carrier with grips. Seat is no doubt very comfortable for the passenger, but I never liked the sofa-like looks. And I am sure many riders don't carry a passenger. Also, plastic luggage carrier included with the Pillion package has very limited usability. Small top surface, limited and not well placed slots for the straps and wide grab handles.
So, I decided to create a new luggage-carrying solution for my own R1300GS Trophy and I would like to showcase it here.
PLEASE MIND THAT TOP RACK SHOWN HERE IS A PROTOTYPE - production version will be powder coated / anodized in deep matte black and edges on the top plate will be much nicer, with some additional 3D milled surfaces. We will offer this as a Perun moto product soon.
The general idea is to offer a low profile rear luggage top rack with integrated grab handles. It should fit with sporty looks of new GS and it should blend with its aluminum subframe and small OEM pillion seat (part number 52531541507) or OEM 'luggage plate' (plastic box replacing a pillion seat - part number 77141541531). Rack will sit flush with the small seat, providing ideal support for all kind of rack-less luggage or duffle bags. Also, it will have some additional features, like support for Rotopax fuel cans and Givi/Kappa Monokey and SW-Motech top case compatibility.
This Perun moto Top luggage rack is designed to be installed on the "clean" rear of the bike - without OEM grab handles / rear racks.
What remains is OEM rear plastic cowl (part number 46637106015) and two plastic clips (part number 52105A09840). These come standard on the bikes with smallest stock grab handles, but if the bike came with bulky passenger seat or rear top box carriers, these should be sourced from BMW dealer.
Installation of the new rack is simple bolt-on procedure. Stock bolts are kept, as the thread engagement for those is very generous.
Beside side bolts, we utilized the underside bolts too, to create very secure assembly. Each side support is connected to the bike in three points, with M8 bolts, making for a very strong connection and enduring forces and vibrations from all directions.
Side supports are made out of stainless steel. We chamfer the edges on the CNC milling machine, then we bent the parts on high precision CNC press brake with special tooling. This tooling allows us to place bolt holes near the bend lines without deforming them.
Side supports act as a grab handles too. To provide a good place for a pillion to hold and a good place to grab a bike when lifting it from the ground or maneuvering it around the garage, we created a billet grab handle that mounts on the Side supports.
It is milled out of solid piece of aluminum and it doesn't have a single rough edge. Upper side is convex so it offers better support for the pillions palm.
We also left a slot in the middle of the grab handle part, so large duffle bags can be easily secured, even if they are placed longitudinally, over the rear seat.
Entire Side support / grab handles assembly sits as low as possible while still being functional - this is done so grab handles don't compromise the fit of rack-less luggage.
Speaking of rack-less luggage, this top rack is optimized for Mosko moto Reckless line (R10 - R40 - R80) but it works great with Giant Loop and Enduristan too (tested!). Here is how Mosko moto Reckless 40 v4 sits on the bike...
...and note how the grab handles are out of the way...
...and how the slots are positioned ideally.
And here is the large brother, Mosko moto Reckless 80 v4 and...
...it sits away from the silencer and grab handles too, and...
...it utilizes its own perfectly placed slots.
Rack also works with new Mosko moto Gnoblin mount - there are four holes for Gnoblin, so it is easy to found ideal position of the bags, according to riders preferences. Rotopax mount can easily be bolted to the rack. So if you need that extra fuel capacity only now and then, this may work well.
As usual, we incorporated several holes for Kriega OS-rack loops, which makes mounting any of US-Drypacks a breeze. And large-ish US-40 Rackpack works great...
...due to four strategically placed slots, large enough for proprietary Kriega's G-hooks.
And last, we incorporated a holes for Givi/Kappa Monokey and SW-Motech top cases onto the rack. This can be utilized to carry new style hybrid quick-disconnect luggage, like Givi Canyon 40l tail bag or smaller top cases. Here are Givi 46l and SW-Motech 38l top cases mounted directly on the rack, without any intermediary plates (using only Givi/Kappa and SW-Motech mounting hardware).
It is important to point out that this top luggage rack is not a top case carrier, but top case compatibility is just an additional feature with limited usability. Top case sits closer to the rider then on the "dedicated" top case carriers, so there is much less room for the pillion. But it is perfect for single rider, as the top case doesn't protrude the lines of the bike too much.
This is a final prototype of the rack and we will do one small batch of these racks soon. Grab handle will be anodized in matt black and rest of the parts will be powder coated in deep matte black. Due to the complex manufacturing process, price will be a bit higher, but still in line with other accessories for BMW.
All feedback appreciated!
And a few more photos.

Hello from Spain! I am very interested in this product, please let me know when it’s available to purchase it! There is only one detail that I don’t really like: the “finger shape” of the handles. Can you make a minimalist version without this finger shape (same as the top part)? Thanks you very much!

Hi Edgar, thank you for your comment. I will reconsider finger shape, I want to see it anodized in black first. It should be less visible.
